What is kava Kava and does it work?

Kava (piper methysticum) hаѕ mild relaxing compounds аnd whеn uѕеd in higher doses, hаѕ аn аlmоѕt intoxicating effect. Kava iѕ comparable tо prescription medications in thе benzodiazepine class fоr treating anxiety disorders, ассоrding tо studies. However, unlikе prescription sedatives, kava iѕ knоwn fоr itѕ calming effect withоut thе typical cognitive fuzziness оr impairment.
Therapeutic use of Kava Kava
According to the Duke University Medical Center, kava kava is effective in relieving the symptoms of anxiety such as nervousness, restlessness and dizziness. It also does not produce dependency or adversely impact blood pressure, sexual functions and heart rate.
Since early 90’s, kava kava has been marketed as an herbal remedy for stress, insomnia and anxiety. Kava Kava contains compounds known as kavalactones which is responsible for its psychoactive qualities. Kavalactones operate on the non-opiate pathways of the brain to produce natural and non-narcotic actions against anxiety. Some clinical studies even suggest that kava kava is better than pharmaceutical drugs like benzodiazepines.
Consuming kava kava before sleeping has shown to result in restful sleep. It is also found to improve sleep quality and decreases the time needed to fall asleep.
Some studies suggest that kava kava may be as effective as certain anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, but without any harmful side effects.
Since kava kava has relaxing effect on the muscles, it can be successfully used to offset pain that is associated with muscles spasm.
Helps quit smoking
Kava kava has both relaxing as well as anxiolytic abilities making it a perfect tool to get rid of drug and alcohol addiction. Kava kava’s relaxing and anxiolytic properties help people cope with cravings associated with cigarette and drinking.
Kava and liver health
Few studies have raised warnings about liver damage from the use of kava. However, there is little evidence to support this notion. According to two independent studies conducted by the Ohio State University and the South Dakoto State University – College of Pharmacy, kava kava was not only found non-toxic to liver, but both the studies also found that kava kava may even protect liver.
Traditionally kava kava is prepared by placing ground root and stem in a porous sack which is placed submerged in water. The sacks is squeezed into a large, curved, wooden bowl to extract the juice. Cups made of coconut half shell are used to serve kava kava beverage. Only one or two cups of kava kava beverage are enough to achieve feelings of heightened attention combined with relaxation.
Sometimes the traditional way of preparing Kava-Kava can be time consuming, I actually discovered an already refined A-grade quality Kava Kava the other month, and I am hooked…. All you have to do is scoop out some powder and mix it with water, they also come in many flavors, I tried the berry blend “tasted like candy.”
If you want something to help reduce stress or anxiety and want to stay clear form medications or alcohol Kava Kava is definitely worth a try. Only in moderation
If you want to take kava therapeutically for anxiety or sleep, make sure to follow the FDA’s dosage guidelines of no more than 290 mg of kavalactones per day. Do this at least until you’re more familiar with how kava affects you. Reportedly those throughout Oceania have consumed anywhere between 1,000 – 3,000 mg of Kavalactones every single day with no ill effects. But that is from a culture steeped in Kava. Everything in moderation, and you’ll more than likely be better than fine.
