Dictionary Definition, Willpower: Control of one’s impulses and actions; self-control.
What exactly is Willpower?
Willpower is the number one reason for not following through with changes according to studies. Willpower is the ability to have self-discipline and self-control to exert his/her will over the inhibitions of their body or self.
Here is the thing most people don’t know, willpower is a depreciating asset. Some of the earliest evidence of this came from the lab of Roy Baumeister. In one early study, he brought subjects into a room filled with the aroma of fresh-baked cookies. The table before they held a plate of the cookies and a bowl of radishes. Some subjects were asked to sample the cookies while others were asked to eat the radishes. Afterward, they were given 30 minutes to complete a difficult geometric puzzle. Baumeister and his colleagues found that people who ate radishes (and, therefore, resisted the enticing cookies) gave up on the puzzle after about eight minutes, while the lucky cookie-eaters persevered for nearly 19 minutes, on average. Drawing on willpower to resist the cookies, it seemed, drained the subjects’ self-control for subsequent situations.
In today’s society, there is so much more distractions and activities that have become part of our regular daily routine and subconsciousness. These habits that people have formed such as checking Facebook, watching more TV, browsing the web, etc make it that much harder to accomplish a task. These are habits that also become obstacles for our willpower. Now imagine if we didn’t have these bad habits or distractions and had to make less minor decisions each day and gave our willpower the upper hand. The less we have to resist and the fewer decisions we have to make, the easier it is to apply action and self-control.
Did you know President Obama uses this strategy ? He only wears blue or gray suits, he has his meals made for him without his opinion. He has so many important decisions to make and tasks to complete in a day he doesn’t want to lose energy on smaller decisions. “You need to focus your decision-making energy, you need to routinize yourself. You can’t be going through the day distracted by trivia”.
Willpower And Gray Matter
What if I told you meditation can increase your willpower?… Okay, then what if I told you people who exercise have more willpower? Well, the fact is that people who meditate and exercise do have more willpower. Maybe you have never tried to meditate or don’t have an exercise program. Imagine if you had an open mind to change and did both. now your setting yourself up for success.
Studies have proven that gray matter is responsible for impulse control which has great importance to willpower. Meditation on a regular basis can increase the amount of gray matter within the brain. Also Physical exercise cultivates the gray matter needed for self-discipline. The increasing of gray matter will also raise your level of consciousness. Another positive aspect of the increasing gray matter is It is known, people with a higher level of consciousness are known to be more in touch with themselves and more grounded.
Sleep And Nutrition
Sleep and nutrition have a significant impact on our ability to exercise our willpower. Studies have proven that sleep deprivation will decrease your willpower. Aim to get 6 to 8 hours sleep a night and attempt to complete your most complicated tasks in the morning when you have more mental energy.
It is possible to decrease your mental energy and willpower by also having a bad diet. Exerting self-control takes a high toll on the brain it will burn up more glucose than memory or language course. The brain uses glucose as energy this why it’s always important to have a healthy diet and a sufficient amount of carbs in your diet. No crash diets! No, no carb diets!
The weakness inside
What do I mean by a parasite? A parasite is a weakness inside ourselves that we have allowed to grow. We have accepted it, nurtured it into a problem that is holding our true self back. Parasites can only live with a host the host being you and they have a voice trying to keep them alive. Its voice will try to trick you and convince you into taking the path of the least resistance and short-term gratification.
How do we beat these parasites? Firstly, you have to know your internal enemies and change your thought process. When we are in a situation that requires willpower, for example deciding to eat fast food or to go home and cook a healthy meal. The parasite will attempt to convince you to eat fast food, it will try to convince you that it will save you time, it tastes better, it’s only one meal. In general, these voices will give you the short term benefits. And if you settle for the short-term gratification you most likely won’t feel as contempt and positive afterward. Thinking in these terms is giving the parasite a home ground advantage.
Try to flip the thought process around so you have the home ground advantage. Think about all the reasons why you shouldn’t settle for junk food first and then relate emotions you would feel after successfully displaying willpower and achieving your goals. The feelings of delaying short-term satisfactions for long-term fulfillment.
