Adrenal Fatigue And Low Sex Drive

The adrenals, the body’s shock absorbers, are the core of the endocrine stress response system. The adrenals are involved in manufacturing numerous hormones; blood sugar regulation; the regulation of the body’s minerals; producing and maintaining the body’s energy levels in conjunction with the thyroid; and producing stress-monitoring hormones.

This 3- inch long gland which rests on top of each kidney is responsible for producing many hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone, norepinephrine, corticosterone and DHEA. The glands help regulate the metabolic and other physiological processes of the body.

Adrenal fatigue and symptoms

Adrenal fatigue is a condition where your body and adrenal glands can’t keep up with the tremendous amount of daily stress many people experience.

If you are under constant chronic stress the adrenal glands become exhausted and the sympathetic nervous system becomes over stimulated. At this stage anxiety gets worse, insomnia, inability to relax, nervousness and a racy mind may also occur and in more severe cases breathlessness, palpitations and even tremors may manifest. A stimulated sympathetic nervous system also results with a decrease in production of digestive juices and gut motility which cause digestive and gut problems which are very common in these patients.

Adrenalin fatigue can causes a lot of  systems in our body to get affected. It is often confused with other medical issues which have almost the same symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms of adrenal fatigue include

  • Oversleeping
  • Fatigue in the afternoon
  • Inflammation in the body
  • Lower sex drive
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Weak chirpy nails
  • Mood swings
  • Irregular blood sugar levels
  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PMS
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Diabetes and headaches

Low sex drive

It is this disturbance in the body’s clock which also affects the person’s libido. A person who is prone to living a very stressful life ends up wearing out his adrenaline glands and especially the stress-related hormone cortisol. The lower levels of cortisol can play havoc with our energy levels throughout the day. In a healthy person, cortisol reaches its highest level early in the morning before declining gradually throughout the day. However, some Adrenal Fatigue sufferers experience spikes in cortisol in the late afternoon and evening, often leading to insomnia.

When  Another hormone which is affected with adrenal gland is the DHEA. This hormone helps regulate the sex drive of the person and is the precursor to the other two really important sex hormones: testosterone and estrogen. Without the proper levels of these hormones, the sex drive takes a fall.

Diagnosing the adrenal fatigue may be difficult but anyone who suffers from it ends up affecting his/her love life as well. With the person not being able to connect physically with his partner, the relationship is bound to suffer as well. It can end up causing more stress in the life. However, there are cures.
